“Swimming to the sea”
The new Taranto swimming stadium is located in a strategic area between a recently formed urban fabric and the rocky coastline: a ‘balcony over the sea’ of great landscape interest.
Signs of the past can still be found here: a piece of the city walls that once enclosed the city and what remains of an ancient necropolis, immersed in the green area, which the project transforms into an urban park to serve the residents.
The new facility includes an indoor and an outdoor pool, both 50m in length, equipped with bleachers that can accommodate up to 2000 spectators.
The project chooses to orient the two pools along the same longitudinal axis but at different heights: the indoor pool, located higher up, is in fact in continuity with the park behind it and accommodates the flow of spectators, while the outdoor pool is at a lower elevation and overlooks the cliff below, thus creating a water surface sloping down towards the sea, a continuous pool deck.
The arrangement of the pools also makes it possible to create a free area of 4500 square metres above the rocky coast, which can be used for the temporary structures necessary for the most important sporting events, but also for recreational and cultural events that find an optimal location facing the sea.
