Taranto Stadium
A translucent ring that animates the city
The architectural design for the renovation of the stadium for the XX Giochi del Mediterraneo in 2026 includes the redesign of the outdoor spaces, a new playing field, new covered stands, and functional rooms for athletes and spectators, as well as for the press and media.
This will be an important work for the city of Taranto, capable of accommodating just over 20,000 spectators who will be able to attend a variety of sports and leisure activities during the inauguration and holding of the XX Mediterranean Games in 2026.
The project also includes the construction of an expanded metal shell that wraps around the grandstands and protects them from the elements.
The expanded metal ‘skin’, thanks to the presence of perforations, allows it to support the lateral thrust of the wind without deforming and at the same time ensures the ventilation inside the stadium.
On the outer surface of the sheet metal, moving images of players or participants in current events can be projected, transforming the outer shell into a screen on an urban scale that makes it possible for the whole city to participate.
